Twitter has recently introduced ‘Twitter Lists’, which is basically a way of selecting a timeline where you only see tweets from the people YOU choose. This new option was an instant hit, and has multiple handy uses. This article will discuss the Twitter Lists, and also how you can use them to advertise your site.
First things first, let’s look at some of the reasons why I like the ‘lists’ feature…
Uses of Twitter Lists
- Authority – The lists are a great way to see someone’s authority. Before, you had to just look at their follower count to see whether they were recognised, but that system had a massive flaw that it’s incredibly easy to get tonnes of followers, so anyone could pass off as an internet celebrity! Now, due to the fact that people only add you to a list if you provide something of value, it’s easy to see who has authority by looking at the number of lists they’re included in!
- Easy to follow – One of the major problems with Twitter was the fact that, if you followed more than about 50 people (which most people do), it was nigh on impossible to keep up with all the tweets. With the lists feature, you can simply click on the list and the timeline will only show tweets by people in the list. This makes it incredibly easy to read the tweets from the people who you want to see!
- Connecting – Because the lists are usually reasonably small, it makes it easy to connect with new people. All you need to do is click on your friends’ lists, and then see who they’ve listed. The probability is that this person will be a quality tweeter, so it’ll be easy to network with new people!
Advertising via Twitter Lists?!
Twitter Lists are also a great way to drive traffic to your Twitter profile, which should in turn direct traffic to your blog. So, how can you use the lists to attract people to your profile?
- Get included in lists – This is the harder of the two options. By getting included in lists, more people will see you, your tweets, and also recognise your authority. To get included in lists, you need to make contacts/friends in your niche on Twitter, and then consistently post quality tweets.
- Make your own lists – By making your own lists, you’ll show up in the profile of everyone you include. This will then lead their followers back to your profile, which means traffic.
How to start your own list
Starting your own list is incredibly easy. Here’s a quick guide on how to do it:
Step One: In your timeline, look in the sidebar. Under the search bar you will see a little header called ‘Lists’. Under this, click ‘new list’.

Step Two: You will then get a pop-up box. Fill out the information in it, and select ‘Public’.

Step Three: Then, when you visit anyone’s profile page, if they’re doing quality and interesting tweets, add them to the list.

What about you?
Are you included in any lists yet? Do you have your own list? How do you decide who to include, and who not to include?
As always, I’d love to hear your views, and if you could share this article with your friends, that’d be great too. As well as that, I’d really appreciate it if you added me to your list(s)!

Thats cool. It makes sense that the more one is being listed can increase his authority and also we can follow people of our niche.

I follow around 2000 people, and without twitter lists I would have quite a pickle. Lists really help a lot in keeping track of your actual friends and it also helps you disregard the people that you just follow back.

Exactly. To maintain a high following, a lot of the time you have to blindly follow. It’s not a tactic I like, but it is pretty effective nevertheless. Like you say, the lists just make it easier to connect with the people who you really want to!
Thanks simon..
this is very informative. i have been using only less number of listing till now.. let me increase this and use it in a right way…

Lists rock. I’m just starting to get into them (made my first one yesterday for Thesis Wordpress users – http://bit.ly/73VmNw). My favourite part of lists is that I can see one’s I’m listed on and go through the followers and find other people that interest me.
I wrote the other day on another feature of lists too – supplementing your RSS reader (http://bit.ly/5ajsSM)
Cool Thesis list you’ve made there Matt; looks like you’ve got all the masterminds in there!
And, nice article too. Just had a quick read through, will have a proper look tomorrow and try and leave a comment.
Thanks for sharing these tips. I’ve always meant to try out the lists, but never got around to it.

It’s well worth it if you can get the time. As I showed, it only takes a few seconds to set up a list, then you can gradually add people in to it!
Hey Simon! I’ve messed around with lists a little bit, but didn’t realize the real power behind them until I read this article. I’ll definitely look into incorporating more lists into my account.

Yeah, I’m included in 21 lists as at the time of writing this comment but I haven’t created any list yet.

Not only does it do the above things I listed, but it also lets your friends know you appreciate their tweets if you include them in a list!
I really liked your idea about measuring someone’s ‘authority’ depending on if they are in a list, or what list they are in. Some other people may describe lists as ‘cliches’ just like in schools. I guess it really depends on how you use twitter – for social or professional purposes.

Nice guide about twitter list man
Awesome post on Twitter lists. Lists (or some sort of filtering system) was inevitable since the spamming and bots got so bad.
Overall, I’m still torn about all the Twitter changes. On one hand, I appreciate the evolution since it’s trying to adapt to the overwhelming concerns but on the other hand, the beautiful thing with Twitter in the first place was its amazing simplicity.
I see where you are coming from, but I would still have to say I think the improvements they’re making are for the best. As long as they make the changes easy to use (like the list feature is), it’s fine.
I didn’t create a list yet!
This was useful and informative..cheers.. will try to make one!

I’ve ended up on a handful of Twitter lists, but I think you have to be careful about it as well. Want to make sure you’re with the right crowd of people, you know?
