Things To Remember When Using Twitter

April 23rd, 2009 · 33 Comments

Twitter is one of the biggest websites today, and is growing every day. According to different sources, there have been around fourteen million unique visitors to Twitter this month alone. This mind boggling figure is accompanied by the fact that there are around sixty thousands tweets an hour, leading to between one and a half million to two million tweets every day.

So, what do all these huge numbers mean? Well, it means that Twitter is popular. It also means that by not using Twitter for marketing, you’re missing out on a huge amount of hits. This article will discuss different ways to use Twitter effectively for marketing.

#1: Followers in their thousands?

You’d be surprised at the amount of people with tens of thousands of followers on Twitter, but every time I see one of these profiles, I can’t help thinking that ninety nine percent of those are useless. Twitter is like anything really, it’s only effective for marketing if you have quality followers who read your tweets and respond to them. Yes, having thousands of followers does look impressive, but at the end of the day it doesn’t really amount to anything, so is it worth the time you’re spending building up a useless base of followers?

#2: Quality tweets do make the difference

Yes, it’s true. Once you’ve got your quality Twitter followers, you’ll need to feed them with something. The mistake I made with my first Twitter account was to only ever tweet when I had a new post up, and then I’d tweet about that. This is the wrong way of doing things. You need to post quality stuff that people are interested in rather than random crap that will get you nowhere.

#3: Interaction is the key

Out of the tweets I’ve done so far on my account, I’m guessing less than 10% of them are links to my website and posts I’ve done. I try my hardest to interact with other Twitter users by replying to their questions and generally just being a friendly guy. Just for a moment, imagine Twitter as an internet marketing conference. When you get there, you’re hardly going to go around screaming out your website name. You’re going to interact with the other people there and try and make friends. After that, you’ll be able to count on them to help you out if you need it, and they will probably be a quality visitor.

#4: Names are important, too.

Don’t disregard your twitter username, either. You’d be surprised at how many people there are with spammy names. I mean, lets be honest here, who are you more likely to interact with out of ‘see_how_i_make_thousands’ and ‘John Smith’. Well, I know I’d pick the latter everyday of the week.

Time for a shameless plug.

Now I’ve got all the heavy stuff out the way, lets relax and do some tweeting. Follow me @teenius and I’ll not only follow you back, I’ll also promise to help you out as often as I can and hopefully we can be even friendlier!
