Link building is important. We all know that. We can’t get a large quantity of links but, we can get a few good quality links.
Any quality link that we get for a blog could fulfill one of the two aims (or possibly both):
- Get traffic from the page where the link is pointing to our blog from.
- Get better Search Engine results for our blog.
That being said we need to understand more often than not the link we are getting from another site is not going to fulfill both the aims equally. A lot of links that will help search engine rankings will not result in getting traffic directly. in other words the link will help our search engine rankings but, will not not get the traffic we need from the link itself.
On the hand a ‘low quality’ link from the search engine perspective might be getting us a lot of traffic directly.
So, defining quality links depends on the results you want. A link from a PR 1 site (that is not related to your blog category) that delivers 1,000 pageviews to your blog is a good link in terms of getting traffic but, a Search Engine Optimization perspective.
A link from a PR 6 blog (that is related to your blog category) that is related to your blog might not get you traffic but, will help search engine rankings.
When talking about good quality links always specify what you are aiming for. Search Engine Rankings or getting immediate traffic.

I’ve never known it this way. I thought that linking on a high PR site will benefit both my traffic and search engine ranking. I’m glad you have deciphered this subtle information.
Welcome!
This make me think that the best back link is the link from high PR reputable site with ton of traffic. However it is really hard to get link from that kind of site so we usually must choose between those two.

Life is hard!
When I first started link building I traded links with just about anyone. But now I am much more careful to link with quality only.
Yes, it’s better to have few quality links than to have many links that make no difference.
I feel that getting the balance right between PR & traffic is key to a sustainable link building campaign. If you’re targeting Google organic rankings, then PR is your ultimate goal. If you’re looking for immediate human visitors, then I suggest that you look at sources that deliver the most traffic, regardless of PageRank.
Agreed!
