This is a guest post by Stefan Knapen from StudySuccessful.com, a site about studying successfully. Stefan is a Dutch graduated high school student who will join the University in September. His site is full with study hacks and random study knowledge.
I know there are some students on the web who are interested in writing and I know they can make something from that interest. You know all how to make money by blogging, but in particular students can save a lot of money. Here are four ways how.
Why you should have a blog anyway
Most students are interested in things, they are more than just beer drinking guys who hang out with friends all the time. Those students should convert their interest in a blog! You know a lot about the subject and you can learn more by reading other blogs related to your hobby. Get into the blogosphere and learn other views on your hobby!
Free books
This is one of the best things in blogging. Doing reviews. You ask the publisher for a free copy of the book and you will review this on your blog. All that is required is a fair amount of readers and an article written about the book. Not every blogger agrees with doing paid (in books) posts, but I think as the review is niche-related nothing is wrong about them.
So you can get free interesting books and review them. You don’t have to buy these books anymore!
Money saved: 20$ per book!
No courses needed
Your hobby is gardening? You are going every Wednesday evening to a gardening-course? You don’t need courses anymore when you read a lot of blogs about gardening! Students can save the money they would spend on courses, which they now take (more or less) online!
Money saved: 25$ per month per course!
Keeps you busy
All right, this doesn’t sound as a good thing. But see it like this: if you are free on a Friday night, what are you going to do? You won’t jump in any heavy literature right? You are going out and spend time (and money) with friends. Most of the activities students do cost a lot of money (from laser-tag till binch-drinking). A hobby like blogging costs also time, and this time you can’t spend with drinking beer anymore!
Money saved: 20$ per week (assuming you go 2 nights out instead of 3)
Blogging gives a small income stream
As you are all teenius.com readers, I assume you know how you can get some money out of blogging. 50 bucks a month doesn’t sounds much if you are compare it with some probloggers, but 50 bucks a month means 600$ a year and that means a week on vacation in Rome!
Money earned: 600$ per year!
Conclusion
Convert your interest in a blog, gather readers, get free interesting books and review them, spend time with blogging instead of drinking beer and get some money out of blogging. Sudents can save serious money with blogging. Go blog, students!

Hey, Stefan! I’ve never thought about asking for free copies of books. I’ve been reading a lot lately and do usually mention them on my blog. This is something I need to start doing. How do you contact the publishers?
Nick Tart’s last blog post..I’m Starting an Internet Marketing Service – JJ Entry #19
Well, that is pretty easy, just find the contact page on the site of the publisher and send an email.
And that is serious, modern publisher have email or contact forms on their website all the time. Just send an email, tell them why they should send YOU a free book to review. Share also your stats, like how many pageviews you get on a day. And you probably have a deal!
Good luck with it Nick!

Thanks for the info, Stefan! I’ll definitely try that route the next time I find a book I want to read. Good luck with your site!

Stefan.. it’s a great idea! I’m not much of a reader if I’m honest, but I suppose it’s really handy if you need them for studying. Nice one!
Haha, this is actually quite an interesting post since I’m a student myself. About the free books, I’ve found some difficulty in getting them, although it probably is because I’m asking for $200 textbooks that have nothing to do with my niche.
I really like that point about “No courses needed.” I’m currently in the process of learning C++ and have opted about of going to an academy to learn in. Instead, I’m following a few blogs and participating in forums to learn the language. Working out just as well in my opinion.

Exactly, you can learn a lot by reading forums and blogs only! Good example of how that point works!

umm, I really like your post but do not agree with your ideas. Unless someone is really into professional blogging, its rather rare to find sanctuary in your blog everytime you feel bored, need free books or just wanna save money. Students tend to spend their free time socializing and blogging is not that attractive to entice them out of their social life.
However, this is purely my own opinion…maybe I am wrong!

You are partly right and partly wrong. Blogging is seen by some college students as a time waisting, stupid thing. But a lot of students, who are interested in more than only beer drinking, like blogging and learning from others. And that group is most of the times the group who gets more successful in college, according to me!
But I think, as you say, the majority of college students, don’t interest at all in these kind of activities.

I totally agree with your point of view. Not all students want to socialize out, right? There are some timid ones, some bookworms and some geeks who would prefer to “waste time” on their own, rather than go out and spend like crazy.
For these students, blogging can be a great experience, and also possibly mold them to become good learners and earn a few bucks on the side.
But then, its generally speaking!
Great post, anyways

I think there’s still potential to go out AND blog, it’s all about balancing your time right
Hmm.. Indeed.
I don’t see myself as a geek who doesn’t like to be with others, I actually go to parties and have a really good time!
Stefan | StudySuccessful.com’s last blog post..The two types of students
Yeah, exactly. I don’t see myself as a “geek” or anything either, and I socialise lots. Like I say, it’s just about getting the balance right
Great Post! I like all the ideas!
Really, this is my favourite topic on Teenius. I hope that you could become a regular guest blogger, or that Simon could elaborate on the subject! I would really love more ideas!
Logan’s last blog post..Investments Part 2: The Risk Factor and Other Terms
Thanks for the suggestion, Logan. When I first started Teenius I was going to do a post similar to this (and young blogging in general), but was afraid that I’d be cutting off a big slice of the adult readers, but now I’ve seen it works I’ll try to do similar posts more often
Yeah, now that the blog is highly developed, it’ll be possible (and highly rewarding) to do more posts like this… in my opinion.
Now that was a good read from Stefan. I guess I should read you more often..
very nice article !

I think that things like getting a free book can be done without having a blog.
True, but this post is about ways that students can save money, not how to get free books
Thanks for all the great comments. It’s nice to see that this post is liked by you guys!

I really enjoy this post. I am currently in Law School and have really found blogging to be a fun outlet among many other things. It is creative and has been bringing in a decent amount of traffic.
Seth W’s last blog post..Diving into the Blogging Pool
Cool post, but I really don’t like the fact that you suggested not to go out on Friday nights to save money. Getting out is a good thing, especially if you’re a stressed out school student. Also I don’t think the people who “binge drink” worry about saving money…
I have never once said “I can’t go out tonight, I have to blog.”
Blogging and setting up websites to make money really teaches you to be independent and how to manage finances.
I go out just as much as everyone else but then have money to spare while they have to put in extra shifts at their jobs.
Well why the topic interested me is controversial. Everyone speaks about making money this speaks about saving it. The points I like are “Keeps us busy” as well as “who are interested in utilising time not wasting simply by hanging our and having beer”. Thats what happens in my case. I am not sure when I was completely free after started the blog.
