The Importance Of A Good Logo

March 25th, 2009 · 22 Comments

A logo is undoubtedly one of the most important parts of a blog. It is a way for people to instantly recognise your site, so if you can get a good logo then you’re likely to get some recognition from it, with the possibility of gaining some traffic, too.

So, how exactly can a good logo help your blog?

Well, firstly, think of this. You’re walking down a busy high street and you see an advertisement for a company like Adidas. Now, you might not see the product, but you see the Adidas logo. Instantly you’ll be thinking about the brand and that’s exactly what they want, so if you transfer this online it will (in my opinion) be doubly successful.

I mean, with a company like Adidas, if you see the logo and think about buying some new shoes, you’ll have to actually travel to the shop and then buy the trainers. If, however, you see an instantly recognisable logo on the web that attracts you, you can log straight on to it, thus getting the blog owner some traffic.

See what I mean? ;)

The main thing to remember is that you need a good, brandable logo. If you just make some random text and call it a logo, then it’s not going to do you or your blog any favours… infact, a poor logo could even turn people away! You need a good logo so that your website is instantly recognisable and therefore attracts visitors.

How do you get a good logo?

Well, the most obvious solution is to hire a good designer (only kidding, I know it isn’t really that simple!).

I find the best way to get quality logos is to hold a contest. There are thousands of quality designers out there, so (in my opinion) to restrict yourself to just one is madness. Holding a contest should attract some real talent and hopefully bring in lots of different perspectives, meaning loads of different designs for you to choose from.

If you’re not so keen about this and would rather go for the conventional “find-a-designer” method, that’s perfectly understandable. Just make sure you’re clear about what you want, and you’re almost certain to get a nice looking logo.
What do I do with my logo?
OK, so you’ve spent a load of money (or not!) getting a brandable logo that you love, but what exactly do you do with it? Well, as with anything to do with websites, you advertise it like crazy!

Get your logo out there. The whole point of having a good logo is so that people can recognise you, so what’s the point if you’re not showing it to anyone?! Put it as your gravatar and go on a commenting spree, use it as your avatar on forums, heck, even put it on a flag and streak a football game holding it if it means that much to you! Just use any method possible to get your logo out there, but don’t forget to make sure you also include the URL of your site. If people see your logo but don’t know what it’s for, you’re kind of missing the point.
So, in conclusion, one of the best ways of advertising your website is not only getting a good logo, but also using it to get your name out there and bring in some new visitors!

  • Harish says:

Good post. Your logo is bit creative. Probably logo is one among those which attracts the readers attention. So even a good logo counts for a blogs success.

  • Farrhad A says:

Yes, a contest is a great idea! :)
    Your logo rocks!

  • Farrhad A says:

Btw how much did you spend on the contest?

  • Teenius says:

Thanks for all the comments, guys.

Alex, I definately agree. Branding is the main reason for a cool logo, so if it’s not brandable it’s not really worth it.

Harish, thanks for the comment. In my opinion a good logo means you’re already 10-20% towards making a great blog.

Farrhad, thanks for the comments and kind words on the logo :) Nowadays I get all my logos from contests as it just seems the best way. I don’t really want to reveal the exact amount I spent on this logo (was well under $100), but I usually spend about $25 on a normal logo. This one cost a bit more because it was a character.

  • Enk. says:

Simon as far as I remember your Pic, Do you really think the Logo Character looks like you? (no offence, kidding!)
    Well, Its really nice !
As for me, Logo is a small Graphic which explains YOU and Your work in a very breif and simple way.

  • Enk. says:

And for the Gravatar, I suggest you use a CLOSEUP of the Photo/Avatar.
And I would also suggest to remove the /category/ base tag for your categories.

  • Teenius says:

    Enk, thanks for the comments.

It does sort of look like me. I felt with the entries I got, although there were some that looked more like me, this one was the most brandable and overall the best.

I find that the logo looks best as a whole thing for my gravatar, and you can still clearly see the character.

Also, why do you think I should remove the /category/ base?

  • Enk. says:

Well I dont have a particular reason.. I was just telling that /%postname%/ permalinks look better. In Search Engine crawling, its not going to read your /category/ or /tag/ in the link..

Sure thing… thanks for commenting over here :D

Hmm, personally I quite like the /category/ thing. Just looks better in my opinion, but I suppose different people like different things :D

  • The first thing I noticed when I opened your site was your mascot/logo. I have been thinking about getting one for a while as there are some great designers around, however I just haven’t had time to get it done.

If you want, I could hook you up with the designer I used. He’s a great guy and I’m sure he’d appreciate the work :D

  • I actually have a few guys on MSN I promised work to, so yeah I’d rather work with them if that’s ok. Btw, did you have a contest for your mascot or hire a designer right out?

    • Teenius says:

I had a contest for this one. I find it’s the best way to get exactly what you’re looking for because there’s loads of designers different sketches, so you have a better choice to choose from :D

  • [...] A while back, right in the early days of Teenius, I wrote a post about logos. You can see it here. [...]

  • You actually have a mascot, not a logo. As well, I think working with a single, high quality, professional logo designer will result in much better logos than you’d think. I have ethical restraints when it comes to getting logos from contests…and a great logo should cost more than $25. It represents your brand, your vision, your employees if you have them, your future and your past, and it should cost more than a nice lunch.

    • Teenius says:

I disagree. Whilst a lot of the time the ‘you get what you pay for’ philosophy is true, it becomes very different in designing and such. A lot of the entrants will be from countries where you need less to live on, so $25 is a good amount. Personally I feel that $25 is on the VERY low end of what you can get away with paying though.

I mean, the Twitter bird cost just $6, and that’s grown to be one of the most well known logos in the webmaster community ;)

  • [...] The Importance Of A Good Logo (25th March) This is a post all about logos (who would have guessed?!). The article talks about what makes a good logo, how you can get a good logo, and it also touches on how a good logo will affect the branding for your site. The post was only the third article on Teenius, so it has some vintage values, too! [...]

  • Television says:

I also think that a good logo is very important for any kind of business, weather it is online or offline. In my opinion, the company logo must be suggestive, and must suggest the activity area of the company.

    • Teenius says:

Definately. It needs to reflect the company, or at least make it inviting to try and find out more about that company/website/whatever :)

  • James King says:

Such a great idea to hold a contest for a logo design. I have spent a great deal of time creating logos.

The best advice I can give is to: make the logo photocopyable, and easy to read and understand.
