Staying Motivated To Earn Online

March 30th, 2009 · 15 Comments

Making money online is not easy… if you think that it’s going to be a stroll in the park then you’re very wrong and should probably reassess your views. In the time I’ve been a webmaster/blogger, I’ve seen and spoken to a lot of new bloggers who don’t make that much money and inevitably give up. This article will discuss the different methods to keep yourself motivated to do a bit more advertising or write another post.

Know What You’re Doing

OK, so this sounds silly, but you should know what you’re getting yourself in for before you even start trying to make money online. Do your research and you’ll find out that making money online is hard work, and only then can you start to move on to actually start getting some earnings.

Set Yourself Goals

Setting yourself goals is probably the best way of staying focused. It doesn’t matter whether you want to earn money to buy your daughter a car, go on an exotic holiday or just to put some food on the table! If you keep thinking about your goals and the reward at the end, you’re bound to be more comfortable with putting in the work you need to be successful. As cheesy as it sounds, repeating these goals in your head is a great way of actually reaching them – write them down and stick them to your screen or something like that. Just keep them visibly clear and it’ll keep reminding you of them.

Take A Break

If you’re really struggling for motivation, take a break from your computer! Do something else for as long as it takes to clear your mind, be it a day, week or month, clearing your mind and starting a fresh will definitely get your blood pumping again. I did go off this game for a while… I had my PayPal account which had all the money in it that I’d earned in the past two months, so I was feeling pretty gutted, especially as I hadn’t done anything wrong. I took a break and after about a week I realised how much making money online meant to me, even if I wasn’t actually making that much at the time. Since then I’ve gone from strength to strength and I’m so glad I did take a break when I did.

Find A New Project

Enthusiasm is what it’s all about, and I often find that starting a new project injects enthusiasm into you and your websites. This part varies for different people, but I find that joining in a group project really helps out with my enthusiasm as you have different people there to push you further and keep you motivated.

Have Your Say

As I mentioned, different people have different ways of staying motivated. We’d love to hear about the methods you use, so just leave a comment telling us!

Most bloggers are suffering from same fever of discouragement..

The “Take a break” part is a really cool one which one must follow.. Taking breaks give your mind a rest, forget earning money / blogging for a little time.. when u come back you are all new, energized, motivated ! with great ideas.

      Thanks for the compliment :D

I just saw more and more people giving up blogging due to not making the right amount of money they wanted (thus being discouraged). I find keeping yourself motivated will help you forfill any goals, hence the post ;)

Good post. I went through a time when I lost motivation. When you do, I agree that you should take a break. It allows you to see what you are missing.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, I definately agree there… when I gave up I missed the networking side of things as well as the feeling of earning money for your hard work, so when I came back I was full of new ideas which really kick started me and now I have enough experience to start a blog about it ;)

The thing about making money online is that if you have committment, you’re likely to succeed. Just take a look around at some of the really successful bloggers… yes, some of them were in the right place at the right time to REALLY kick off, but they all worked incredibly hard to be where they are today.

  • I have never really focused trying to earn money online, but one day when I start to I will definitely keep these tips in mind. I already know that setting goals for yourself will help you a lot.

I am kind of 50/50 on starting new projects though. When you first start a new site, you are all happy and excited to do it. But as you go on, you lose that motivation and that enthusiasm and it becomes harder to do. For those who can keep up with it all, I think they are the ones who truly deserve the success. But to the ones who can’t, then I suggest they look into something else.

Thanks for the comment, Alex. :)

Regarding starting new sites, the worst thing that’s going to happen is you make no money and have to sell the site on (thus making money). That said, I think if you’re serious about earning money online then you need to be in it for the long haul ;)

Cool post. This will help alot when i tend to get side tracked. ;)

    • Teenius says:

Thanks for dropping by, Ben. Hope you visit again soon.

Regarding getting sidetracked, it’s a huge part of making money online that I find the vast majority of people I know who earn find it a problem. For me, one of the greatest methods to stop getting sidetracked is to just go for a quick walk and readjust your mind to the working mentality. Then, once you’re in the flow of working, you should be able to stay concentrated. :D
