Guest Posting: What, Why and Where

April 25th, 2009 · 36 Comments

I recently made myself a goal whereby I’m going to do at least one guest post per week, so I thought I should write an article about it to let you guys know what on earth I’m on about.

Guest posting is nothing new, but is (and has always been) one of the most effective ways of advertising your site, increasing your readership, and also building a community. This article will give you the basics that you need to start guest posting, and also tell you how to guest post effectively.

What is a guest post?

I know there’ll be a few readers who are unsure of what a guest post is, so let me explain. A guest post is where you go on someone else’s blog and write a post for their site. In return, you usually get an author bio where you can put a bit about yourself and also some links.

Why should I guest post?

If this is the first time you’ve really heard about guest posting, you’ll probably be wondering why on earth you’d want to waste your time writing articles for other people’s sites, well, to you people, let me explain. If your post is good, you’re bound to attract some more readers from that blog, thus gaining you some quality readers who will probably check back and comment on your blog. Because of this, it’s a great way of advertising your site on other people’s sites in your niche to get yourself (and your blog) go viral within your niche.

Where should I guest post?

I personally guest post on two different types of sites:

  1. Popular sites in my niche. This will hopefully build me a good amount of new readers for my blog and get myself known.
  2. My friends’ sites. I sometimes do guest posts on smaller blogs, too. This is purely to be nice and hopefully help out my friends’ blogs and keep relations good. You’ll often find that in this case, they’ll quite happily guest post back.

You may go to some popular blogs where you want to comment and you won’t see a page related to guest posting. In this case, I would suggest that you email the site owner and ask them NICELY if you can do a guest post. Tell the owner why they should let you do a guest post… persuade them!

If you follow me around the blogosphere, you might have seen some of my guest posts on other people’s blogs, and here are a few of them:

If you have a blog and would like me to do a guest post, please just contact me and we can talk further about it (after all, I do want to do a guest post a week). If you’re interested in writing a guest post here on Teenius, please read the designated page about it.
