Laying Out Blog Posts Effectively

April 2nd, 2009 · 31 Comments

How your posts look is maybe one of the most important parts of running a blog. If you keep the posts nicely arranged then your reader will find it easier to read the post and is therefore likely to stay and leave a comment or even return to look at your future posts. This article will discuss different ways to improve the layout of your blog posts effectively.

layout

Images

Using images is probably the best way of breaking up the post. I personally use one image between the introduction and the main article with the information. For me, this breaks up the post nicely as people don’t really need to read those two parts at the same time. I would recommend using reasonably small images as if they’re too big then they’ll distract the reader from the actual content. It’s also worth noting that if you’re writing an exceptionally long post, it might be worth using two or more images.

Headings

I must admit, I’ve only started using different headings recently, but I’ve noticed a vast improvement in the way my posts look since then. I personally now use h2 tags to head my different points. If you don’t know what these are, they’re a HTML code that can provide different size headings for your titles (h1 being the biggest, h6 being the smallest).

You can make these tags by putting

<h2>Your title goes here</h2>

If you don’t feel comfortable playing with HTML (even though it’s unbelievably simple, and that’s from someone with about as much knowledge as a pig ;) ), then you can try making the header bold and underlining it. Just use anything to make it distinguishable and separate it from the other points.

Structure

The structure of your posts is very important for keeping readers engaged. When I write I always make sure I have an introductory paragraph for two reasons… firstly it looks good on the homepage with the excerpts and gives the reader an idea of what the article contains, and secondly because it breaks it off for the rest of the post.

After the intro, I will then make my main points (all with the different headings I mentioned earlier), moving onto my final paragraph which will invite the readers to leave a comment or bookmark us with the social bookmarking sites (which is always appreciated ;) )

Also, you should always remember to paragraph your point at regular intervals. Paragraphing is a great way of breaking up the posts as it looks a lot less daunting and confusing to read. You should start a new paragraph whenever you make a new point or if you’ve just been going for too long, although you should try and keep it as grammatically correct as possible.

What do you think?

As always, we’d love to hear from you if you have some tips on anything mentioned in this article. There are always loads of different ways to structure differently or just make the article easier to read, so if you have anything to add please feel free to leave a comment (and I always comment back). Thanks for the kind words ;)

Very good point. Yes, content might be king, but if you don’t display it in a way that makes the content look good, no one will stick around to read it :(

Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment, hope you check back soon. Regarding my age… look around, there are thousands of teenagers with websites. Infact, if my parents own the domain/hosting then I’m perfectly within the law by updating the blog. ;)

Probably Images are one of the most important part of posting. It helps attract peoples attention. Great post Simon :)

Harish’s last blog post..Why You Should Promote Your Contest? And How ?

    • Teenius says:

Agreed. Just having loads of text looks really daunting to read for anyone who visits your blog, and they’re therefore unlikely to stick around and read the rest of the post. Putting images/headings in seperates the post therefore making it easier to read :)

There are some blogs, having so awesome content and posts.. they are so cool really. But all they lack from is images in their Posts. yea One at the top but the posts are too long to read’em down with no another image.
I’m an “Image in a Post” lover :D – But keeps on neglecting there posts for that.. :(

    • Teenius says:

I find that if you use one post at the top then it’ll usually suffice, especially if you use headings later down. The images are only really there to make the text look less daunting to read, so if you put headings then it breaks up the post by itself :)

Great points! The way your posts look is very important. By the way, you can install an editor besides the default one( i use FK editor) and they do almost all the coding for you. Even though it’s pretty easy, it still might be worth noting.

Also, I’m not telling you how to run your blog, but I think your supposed to use H3 for content. I used to use H2 headers too until I learned you were supposed to use H3 for best SEO results.( I forget were). Anyways, just a suggestion and great post.

teenwebguru’s last blog post..What do you think about my name?

    • Teenius says:

Hmm, thanks for pointing that out as I’ve never heard of any editor programs, so that should be a pretty useful resource :D

Regarding the h2/h3 thing, I personally used h2 because I thought they looked best on the blog. I try to write for users rather than search engines, but I’ll have a look into it and report back… thanks :)

  • I like lots of your points. when people read on the web they tend to scan and you need to break up the posts with lists, headings and images.

I agree that the readers tend to just quickly look and pick out points that really grab their eye, so hopefully by using headers it’ll make their stay more enjoyable ;)

      • Any thing you can do to make your content more scan able will make your content more enjoyable.

No problem – i think i might try and make it on to your top commentator list.

        • Teenius says:

Agreed. Even if they don’t read the full post, as long as they enjoy it that’s the main thing as they’re more likely to come back again.

Look forward to future comments ;)
